What Are Your Dreams for 2017?

Recently, a friend and I were talking about setting goals for the new year. One of my questions to him was, “What do you dream to accomplish in 2017?”  He replied, “That’s a good question”, then paused for a while and eventually said “I can’t answer your question, because I don’t know what I would dream to accomplish this year.  I really have not thought about it!”

Every new year, after I have reflected over the last year, I shift toward thinking about the future.  There is a whole series of questions that I ask myself about the coming year, but right now, I’d like to focus on two.

Two Important Questions

The first two questions that I ask myself at the beginning of a new year are, “What do I want to achieve?” and “Who do I want to become?”

Now, you may be thinking to yourself, “I understand how the first question ties to my dreams for this year, but I don’t get the second question!”

What and Who

Well, it is common for many people to focus on what they want to accomplish or do in the coming year. But I have found “who do I want to become?” is an important, complimentary question for us to consider.

The reason is simple; our doing can only advance as far as our being.  In other words, what we do is directly related to who we are. For example, if I desire to lead others, I must first lead myself.

When I think about “who I want to become”, I think about my entire being: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Let’s break down these areas and see how this type of thinking can help us dream about the new year:

Physical:  I have often said, “If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything”. This statement reflects the fundamental importance of our physical health. If you are suffering from major health problems, then every other aspect of your life is adversely affected. If, on the other hand, you are well-rested, in shape and in your target weight range, then you’re positioned to live your best year ever.

Mental: Often, big dreams require stepping out of our comfort zone into the unknown.  And the unknown almost always demands that we expand our knowledge base and skill set. Sharpening and expanding our current knowledge equips us to step out into our big dreams for 2017.

Emotional: Our emotional well-being touches on our mindset and our relationships with others. If we have a scarcity mindset, then our dreams for the coming year will be limited.  But, if we embrace an abundance mindset, we can dream big dreams for the new year. Also, an abundance mindset allows us to give to and help others. We realize there is enough for everyone, and we willing take time to develop our relationships with those around us.

Spiritual:  Directing our attention to our spiritual life allows us to connect with a greater purpose beyond ourselves. I find that my spiritual life is the foundation for the rest of my life.  If our spiritual life is aligned with our greater purpose, I believe we work and live with deeper connections and greater meaning.
